In 1980, Waterways initiated In Search of a Song as an outgrowth of a children's poetry workshop Barbara Fisher conducted at the Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village.

In 1995 the Volumes and Volumes of Poetry Series done in partnership with NYC Public Schools became part of this project.

By 2005 Waterways had published more than 1000 individual high school student poets in their own limited edition chapbook.

Poets published in this series received ten copies of their book. Class sets (25 copies) were given to each poet's teacher.
