Robert Evans
Dancing with Words

Robert Evans, the assistant director of the Harlem Tabernacle's Dance Ministry, brought his talents to the classroom. Working with students from Frederick Douglass Center and the New York City Vocational Training Center, Mr. Evans helped students to choreograph movements to their original poetry. The students performed before audiences at the Picnic House in Prospect Park, the Jefferson Market Branch of the New York Public Library, and the Concord Baptist Nursing Home.

Students discussed the musical and mimetic elements of poetry in preparing for their performances. The activities in which they were engaged addressed the New York State Learning Standards in English and Arts. Students read, wrote and listened for literary response and expression. They created, performed and participated in the arts.

As a result of his work with Waterways, Mr. Evans was hired as a full time teacher with the New York City Vocational Training Center.
